What is the Q107 Classic Rock disCOVERy Series?
The Candice Rock Blog 0

Sometimes people ask me why I started the Classic Rock disCOVERy Series. The answer is that I love promoting bands and luckily I am in a position to do so. Since I am not working at a station that normally promotes said bands, I had to find a way to work Q107 into the equation. Q107 is THE classic rock go to. The station is built on the foundation of rock. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles…how can new music compete with that? The answer is that they don’t have to. Instead, new bands can pay homage to their favorite classic rockers.

In Toronto there are very few chances for bands to get exposure. There are also very few opportunities for listeners to find new music. Just because a band is not on the radio does not mean that they aren’t worth listening to. The music industry is tough…take Dan Mangan for example. He worked his butt for years. He applied for grants and got shot down, he played gigs for beer, and begged radio stations to put him on the air. You could have been listening to him all along.

The Classic Rock disCOVERy Series has turned into a community of bands that promote and support each other not just in Toronto but all over the country. It is so much fun to hear a Toronto band like The Balconies cover The Beatles or Vancouver’s Yukon Blonde sing Suite Judy Blue Eyes or Nova Scotia’s Joel Plaskett giving props to Bruce Springsteen. Sprinkled in between the bands you might already know are these little nuggets of awesome. A collection of bands that are just trying to make it in the industry. Here are a few of those bands.

The Damn Truth – Montreal

The Elwins – Toronto

Little Foot Long Foot – Toronto

Alert The Medic – Halifax

And now for some of the bands you have probably heard of.

Joel Plaskett singing a Bruce Springsteen tune

Yukon Blonde covers Crosby Stills Nash and Young

Zeus covers Big Star

"Oh Oh Oh it’s Magic" when The Elwins stop by Q107
The Candice Rock Blog 0

It was so much fun hanging with The Elwins. The session kicked off with a really awesome cover of Magic by Pilot. Don’t recognize the band? You are not alone. Magic is an “oh, that song”. You know the song but you probably don’t know who sings it. Maybe this will help. “Oh Oh Oh, It’s Magic!” The Elwins impressed as soon as they busted into this tune. Their new album And I Thank You is available now. If you want to have some fun….listen to The Elwins. I dare you not to smile. Enjoy!

Toronto bands about to make it big!
The Candice Rock Blog 0
These bands are starting to get a lot of attention in Canada so music directors looking to freshen up your cancon check this out.

Teenage Kicks spent the summer opening for Theory of a Deadman. With a little love from Canadian radio these guys will become a  household name.

The Balconies are a trio out of Toronto via Ottawa. Jacquie and her brother Stephen have a great dynamic. Jacquie and Liam both went to university to study classical music. Liam even got his masters. This band has the talent and training to be the next big thing in Canada.

Poor Young Things have been touring with The Trews and playing dates all over Canada. Their latest album was produced by Jon Drew (The Arkells). Check out their Warren Zevon cover from the Classic Rock disCOVERy Series on Q107.com

Wake me up before you Indiegogo
The Candice Rock Blog 0

I am sure you have heard a lot about the Indiegogo/Kickstarter campaigns that musicians are doing now. Some people think it is lazy to ask your family and friends for money so you can record while others think it is a great way to get funding. One of my Q107 Indie Invaders Noel Johnson, is nearing the end of his pre buy campaign. The nice thing about THIS campaign is that if he doesn’t hit his goal, you get your money back. So it is not charity at all. You either get a wicked album or your cash back. I would rather pre buy an album and wait a couple months then have to wait around for a musician to save $10000 waiting tables for some new tunes. This is also a great way to promote an album that isn’t even out yet. You can check out his album pre buy campaign here

This is one of the songs that will be on the upcoming album if he gets the funding via indiegogo.com/noeljohnson

There is a buzz about Little Foot Long Foot after NXNE
The Candice Rock Blog 0

So naturally, I invited them in for a visit. Little Foot Long Foot is a threesome fronted by Joan Smith. It’s like the Black Keys with a chick singer. Joan can shred and sing and watching the band is absolutely incredible! LFLF used to be in a Zepellin cover band called Red Zeppelin so Joan covered Gallows Pole for the CLASSIC ROCK disCOVERy SERIES on Q107.com. Enjoy!

Montreal Busker Turned Rockstar!
The Candice Rock Blog 0

Honheehonhee stopped by Q107 Toronto yesterday and I couldn’t wait to share their Classic Rock disCOVERy Series with you! This band is out of Montreal and fronted by a famous busker on the Metro. Greg is busking to pay for the upcoming tour. He is also the handsome little girl in the pink tutu on the front of their debut album “Shouts”. These guys and girl have got it together. Their Solsbury Hill cover was great and they even did the screaming and cheering bit at the end. Their debut album is also wicked. They will be in Toronto to play Sneaky Dee’s tomorrow night as part of NXNE. Hope you like this one as much as I do.

Secret Broadcast wants to call you!
The Candice Rock Blog 0

So this week Q107 Indie Invaders Secret Broadcast released a video saying they will call each and every person that buys their new EP. Here is the video.

They admit it will be time consuming but that is how much their fans mean to them. I had the pleasure of meeting Secret Broadcast while working at X92.9 in Calgary. They moved about a year before I did so it was only fitting that I got them in for a Q107 Classic Rock Indie Invasion Session. They did a wicked version of U2′s I Will Follow.

Along with an acoustic version of the new single Ray Gun.

Check out the interview here.

In this day and age it is getting harder and harder for bands to come up with creative ways to get their name out there. So kudo’s to Secret Broadcast! I have no doubt they will call each and every one of you.  For more on The Candice Rock Blog. Follow me on twitter and facebook.

Indie bands love The Beatles
The Candice Rock Blog 0

I absolutely loved having The Balconies in the Q107 studio. I think they could be the next big thing. With Liam on drums, Jacquie kicking ass on lead vocals and her brother slappin’ da bass…this trio out of Toronto had the best time recording Revolution. Stephen even brought his Beatles bass.

You should check out their video for Kill Count off the new EP produced by Jon Drew (Arkells).

Another band that covered The Beatles was Amos The Transparent out of Ottawa. There were about 7 of them in the studio and the cello sounds fantastic.

He is called The Boss for a reason
The Candice Rock Blog 0

To date there have been more than 30 Classic Rock Indie Invasion Sessions on Q107.com. A couple classic rock artists keep popping up. Last week I posted bands that are crazy about Neil Young. This week it’s The Boss. Who doesn’t love Bruce Springsteen?

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is from Calgary. He was in Toronto for Canada Music Week and we had a lot of fun with his session. This is a great cover of Fire.

HOTKID are a punk duo out of Toronto. Check out the rest of their session here.

This is The Autumn Portrait out of Calgary. These guys came in at the end of CMW so Freddie’s voice is a little on the raspy side after 5 days of concerts, clinics and networking. Check out their session here.

Should I do The Beatles or Tom Petty next week? Twitter or Facebook me.
